ABOUT BANSKA STIAVNICA
Banská Stiavnica or Selmecbanya is the oldest mining town in the region and also a historically fascinating place. No wonder many are interested in exploring this charming, UNESCO World Heritage-listed town. Why is this place so magical? The city is located in the center of a long-extinct volcano, then its picturesque, untouched architecture or the unique nature, hillsides all around are also a reason of this. For several centuries, Selmecbanya was one of the wealthiest cities in Europe because of the silver and gold extracted here.
WHAT I LOVE THE MOST
What I like the most: the unique buildings and the convenient size of the town. In the morning, having a coffee on the main street and then getting lost in the town center’s narrow streets, like on Dolná Ruzová Street, which is one of the most beautiful avenues. For lunch, I try out something local, bryndzove halusky is very tasty. During the afternoon, I would climb up to the Calvary Church, the panorama is just breathtaking from there. Or I would visit the nearby water reservoirs, the tajchs.
